MASSENA -- Village police say a Massena man has been jailed on charges that he broke into another person's house and assaulted him.
Zachary M. Pitts, 22, of 52 Maple St. Apt. 3 is charged with first-degree burglary, second-degree robbery and third-degree assault, according to police.
Massena Village Court officials say paperwork filed with their office accuses Pitts of breaking into James Pratt's house on South Main Street around 10 p.m. saturday, and striking him in the head and body several times and causing injury.
Court officials say Pitts gave a statement to police and told them he and several others went to the residence to steal marijuana and fentanyl.
Pratt's mother, Carolyn Pratt, contacted North Country Now on Aug. 24 and said there was no fentanyl, and that Pitts took five legally obtained prescription medications.
“They took all his prescriptions," Carolyn Pratt said. "My son does not take fentanyl."
Pitts was charged at 2:40 a.m. Saturday at the village police station, police said.
He was arraigned in Massena Village Court by Justice Eric Gustafson and remanded to the St. Lawrence County Correctional Facility, Canton, in lieu of $10,000 bail or $20,000 bond.
