MASSENA -- Doug Ackley, a native of Massena, was inducted into the New York State Amateur Hockey Association Hall of Fame at Turning Stone Resort in Verona May 20.
He served as president of the local and state organizations and as a national director.
Ackley, 59, was born in Massena, attended Massena schools and served in the U. S. Navy in the Submarine Service.
Ackley first began coaching and officiating youth hockey while in high school in Massena. Later he coached in Saratoga Springs, Oswego and Lewiston. He served as NYSAHA Central Section President for five years, NYSAHA President for six years, and USA Hockey District Director for 12 years.
In 2005 Doug was elected as a Director Emeritus for the NYSAHA.
In addition, he was president of Massena Minor Hockey.
As a USA Hockey District Director Doug was a leading proponent of building the grassroots initiatives that USA Hockey has made the foundation for successful programs throughout the U.S.
For his dedication to grassroots hockey, Ackley has been honored with the Wm. Thayer Tutt Award, USA Hockey’s most prestigious award for a volunteer.
In 2014, he retired as general maintenance superintendent at the New York Power Authority.
