Jeep overturns in two-vehicle crash in Potsdam; Colton man charged

POTSDAM – A Colton man has been charged with several traffic violations including reckless driving after he struck a Jeep Wrangler on Pierrepont Avenue, causing it to overturn Friday.

According to village police, Morris L. Fifield, 19, accelerated at a high rate of speed to pass a line of traffic slowing for the Jeep to turn left onto Canton Drive on the SUNY Potsdam campus shortly before 5:11 a.m.

Police said their investigation and interviews of witnesses found that Fifield had been following traffic at an unsafely close distance and careened back and forth before pulling out across solid lane dividers to pass the line of traffic.

Fifield struck the Jeep in the rear driver’s side, causing it to flip onto its side, police said. Then, Field’s vehicle was damaged when it spun out into the guardrails, police said.

Airbags deployed in both vehicles, but all occupants of the vehicles declined medical treatment, police said.

Morris was charged with reckless driving, speed not reasonable and prudent, passing in a no-passing zone and following too closely, police said.

The Potsdam Fire Department and Potsdam Volunteer Rescue Squad also responded to the scene. Both vehicles were towed from the scene.
