CANTON – The president of the United University Professions union chapter at SUNY Canton says the group will be holding an informational picket to express support for SUNY Canton President Dr. Joseph Kennedy and to stand against SUNY's newly-released Campus Alliance Network at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 31, on the college's Roselle Academic Plaza.
The public is invited to observe or join in the informational picket.
SUNY's Campus Alliance Network seeks to combine administration and services at SUNY Potsdam and SUNY Canton, according to press release sent out by UUP chapter president David F. Butler.
Chancellor Nancy Zimpher and SUNY Provost David Lavallee recently announced that the two St. Lawrence County colleges are to share a president next year as part the overall cost-saving strategy.
Similar plans have been made at other SUNY colleges.
Butler says he “orchestrated the event to demonstrate faculty members' frustration about not being consulted on the plans to share services and their objection to sharing a president with SUNY Potsdam.”
UUP is the union representing more than 35,000 academic and professional faculty on 29 SUNY campuses.
More than 270 of SUNY Canton's 312 UUP represented employees are union members.
