HOGANSBURG -- The Twin Leaf gas station was destroyed in an early Sunday morning fire.
Hogansburg-Akwesasne Volunteer Fire Department officials said the blaze started as a vehicle fire next to the gas station.
“Attempts to battle the vehicle fire with extinguishers prior to HAVFD arrival were unsuccessful and a second call from the scene reported the flames had spread to the structure,” HAVFD Chief Derek Comins said in a prepared statement.
He said windy conditions and a “large amount of combustible materials” hampered their initial efforts.
“An aggressive exterior attack with aerial apparatus from HAVFD and Massena stopped the fire from spreading through the entire structure,” Comins said.
Firefighters were able to save a newly opened building on the same property, which houses businesses including a tobacco shop and UPS store.
Nine other fire departments responded, including Bombay, Fort Covington, Westville, Moira, Massena, Helena, Norfolk, Brasher-Winthrop and Louisville. Seaway Valley and Akwesasne Mohawk ambulance services were also on-scene, along with Franklin and St. Lawrence county fire investigators.
