Deputies looking for businesses hit by bad check scheme

CANTON – St. Lawrence County Sheriff's deputies are asking any local businesses that might have been victims of an alleged check scheme carried out by a Canton woman to contact them for their investigation.

According to deputies, Shannon L. Brown, 34, 11 Jameson Road, Canton, has been charged with second-degree scheming to defraud stemming from incidents in August when she went into several local businesses under the pretense of purchasing items from them.

Deputies say Brown paid for the items with checks from a closed account, then shortly after, returned the items to the store for cash refunds.

She allegedly stole $315.30 from the stores through this scheme.

She was issued an appearance ticket to answer the charge in Canton Court later this month.

Deputies believe that there may be other stores in the area that were victims of the scheme. Those with information are encouraged to call the sheriff's office at 379-2222.
