POTSDAM -- The Clarkson School (TCS), Clarkson University’s early college entrance program, recently welcomed to campus another class of high-achieving high-school-age students.

Since 1978, TCS has offered such students from around the country and the world the option to forgo what is typically their high school senior year and begin university coursework at Clarkson. TCS students are fully matriculated first year undergraduates, taking a full course load alongside other Clarkson students.

Enrollment has risen in recent years, and this year includes students from 10 U.S. states and three countries.

“The Clarkson School provides an opportunity for these students to continue challenging themselves academically, while in many instances completing the last few classes to satisfy their high school diploma requirements,” Director of Admissions Matthew Rutherford said. “Our students completely immerse themselves in the university environment,” he said, and they “gain valuable skills and insights that are not available in a high school setting.”

The students live in their own residence halls with specialized programs and activities designed to bridge the transition between high school and college, according to a press release from the university. They have access to all of Clarkson’s resources and amenities with separate residential facilities, activities specifically designed for them, and a faculty and staff dedicated to meeting their unique individual and collective needs.

While many students opt to remain at Clarkson after their TCS year to complete their degrees, others go on to attend other universities with the assistance of their Clarkson School academic advisor.
