Brutal cold likely to give way to snow, sleet, freezing rain Wednesday and Thursday in St. Lawrence County

A warm front will produce a period of light snow, which will transition to a light wintry mix of sleet, freezing rain, and snow by Wednesday afternoon, according to the National Weather Forecast (NWS).

Snow accumulations of 1 to 3 inches with a minor light ice accumulation is possible, NWS says. Occasional rain with pockets of freezing rain is likely on Wednesday night, before a cold front changes the precipitation back to a period of accumulating snowfall on Thursday.

Given the extremely cold ground temperature any rain that does fall will refreeze on roads, sidewalks, and parking lots on Wednesday night, making for challenging driving conditions, the service says.

Plenty of uncertainty continues for Thursday with regards to how quickly the cold air arrives, placement of precipitation along boundary, and associated precipitation type, forecasters say.
