Vandenbeemt, Saints women's tennis excel at ITA Championship

Senior Elkie Vandenbeemt advanced to the quarterfinal in the singles bracket and semifinals of the doubles bracket of the ITA Regional Championship at William Smith over the weekend. Other competitors for the Saints included first-year Emily Wyman, who teamed with the Saints captain in doubles, and fellow seniors Olivia Arroyo and Anna Young.

In singles, Vandenbeemt played to a trio of straight set wins over Elmira's Ayaka Yoshino (6-2, 6-0), fellow Liberty League opponent Zoe Valella of Skidmore (6-1, 6-2) and Geneseo's Cat Crummey (6-3, 6-2) to advance to the quarters. She was edged 7-5 in the opening set by Vassar's Kate Christensen, and fell 6-0 in the second set to end her run in the tournament.

Arroyo advanced to the third round of singles play with a 6-3,6-3 win over Nazareth's Jean McCarthy before also downing Michaelann Denton of William Smith 6-2, 6-1. The St. Lawrence senior eventually lost out to Brittany Reedman of The College of New Jersey 6-1, 6-3.

Both Anna Young and Wyman fell in first round matches to opponents from Vassar; Young to Ava Sadeghi (6-1,6-3) and Wyman to Winnie Yeates (6-3, 6-2).

In doubles, Vandenbeemt and Wyman downed a team from New Paltz and two Liberty League teams en route to the flight semifinals. After 8-3 and 8-1 wins in the first and second rounds, respectively, the Saints edged RPI's Melanie Frank and Emily Laurillard 8-6 to move on to face regional powerhouse pairing Sadeghi and Samantha Schapiro of Vassar. Despite being up 5-4 in the match, Vandenbeemt and Wyman eventually lost out 8-5.

"I was proud of the way Emily and Elkie rose to the occasion in doubles this weekend," Head Coach Greg Kreitzer said. "We had our chances in the semifinal match against Vassar and played the way we wanted to play. They left the tournament with their heads held high—but also leave hungry knowing that we could have done even better."

Arroyo and Young also fell to a Vassar team in the doubles flight. After earning an 8-5 win in the first round, the duo was shut out, 8-0, in the second by the Brewers Emily Hallewell and Winnie Yeates.

The Saints were initially scheduled to continue their fall season with a dual match against SUNY Oneonta on Monday afternoon, but the match has been rescheduled to the spring semester. Instead, the team will wrap up its fall schedule with matches against Connecticut College and Wesleyan University on Oct. 12.
