SUNY Canton softball drops doubleheader to SUNY Brockport

Naples, FL – Courtney Hyland led the Roos with four hits but the SUNY Canton softball team dropped a doubleheader to Brockport (17-4) and Crown (8-1) on their third day of play at the Gene Cusic Classic in Florida.

Game 1

Brockport (7-5) scored nine runs over the first three innings and blew the game open with an eight run fourth to secure a 17-4 run-rule victory in five innings in the opener.

SUNY Canton scored once in the third and added three runs in the fifth. Hyland plated Alicia Evans on an RBI single to center in the third and scored Jaedyn Ossont in the fifth on an RBI base hit to left. Stefanie Miller plated Evans in the fifth on an RBI ground out and Desiree Pryce brought home Hyland on a single to left field.

Nicole Woodward gave up nine earned runs with a strike out and walk over three innings, while Kelsey White surrendered three earned runs in two innings of relief work.

Becky Knorr earned the victory for the Golden Eagles giving up one earned run with four strike outs in three innings. Lindsay Wachna went 4-for-4 with a home run and 4 RBI, while Meghan Cullen was 3-for-4 with three runs and a homer.

Game 2

Crown jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning and added one in the third, three in the fourth and two in the seventh to earn an 8-1 win in the nightcap.

Ossont and Raechel Yost posted two hits each for the Roos, while Hyland and Brittany Staltare doubled. The Roos (0-6) scored their lone run in the seventh when Brittany Miner reached on a fielder's choice plating McKenzie Mattison who pinch-ran earlier in the inning.

Woodward gave up five earned runs in seven innings of work with two strike outs and a walk. Lis King earned the win for Crown with six strike outs and one earned run in seven innings. Cassidy Valenzuela paced the offense with two hits, while King helped her own cause driving in three runs.

The softball team concludes its Florida spring break trip on Thursday morning when it takes on Southern Vermont College at 9 a.m. followed by an 11 a.m. contest with Wilmington College.
