Saints men's hockey falls to UConn in Ice Vegas Consolation

The St. Lawrence men's hockey team couldn't overcome an early 3-0 deficit, as the Saints fell to the University of Connecticut, 6-3, in the consolation game of the Ice Vegas Invitational on Saturday night in Las Vegas.

Cade Gleekel, Kaden Pickering and Andrew McIntyre scored for the Saints in the loss, with the latter coming on the power play.

Six different players scored for the Huskies in the win, with goals coming from Max Kalter, Kale Howarth, Marc Gatcomb, Jachym Kondelik, Benjamin Freeman and Alexander Payusov.

With the loss, the Saints fall to 3-14-1 on the season, while UConn improves to 7-12-1 overall.

The Huskies jumped out to an early 3-0 lead with three against St. Lawrence starter Emil Zetterquist in the opening 6:55 of the first period. Kondelik's goal off a tip in front beat backup Daniel Mannella five hole to extend the lead to 4-0 at the 9:13 mark of the opening frame.

Thirty seconds later, Gleekel put the Saints on the board with his second of the weekend and fourth of the season when he pushed a loose puck under UConn's Adam Huska in a scrum in front to make it 4-1 in favor of the Huskies.

In the opening minutes of the middle frame, Benjamin Freeman helped UConn regain its four-goal lead with a rip from the half wall thru traffic that beat Mannella short side for a 5-1 game.

At the 10:21 mark of the second period, Pickering notched his second of the season with a blast from the left circle that went top shelf off an odd-man rush into the zone with Dimoff and Laidley, who assisted on the play.

UConn answered back at 17:27 of the frame with their sixth and final goal of the game off the stick of Alexander Payusov, as he got a fortuitous bounce off a St. Lawrence defender to beat Mannella high glove.

Senior Arthur Brey came out to start the third period in between the pipes for the Saints and made 14 saves in 20 minutes played and did not allow a goal. Mannella finished with 20 saves in 33:05, while Zetterquist made four saves in 6:55.

The Saints final goal of the week was a power play tally from McIntrye at 18:14 of the third period, as he tipped a shot by Jake Stevens in the slot to beat Huska for his second of the season.

St. Lawrence finished 1-for-6 on the power play, while UConn went 0-for-3.

The Huskies outshot the Saints 44-25 in the win.

Saturday's game was the final non-conference matchup of the season for the Saints, as they'll return to ECAC Hockey play next weekend when they host RPI and Union in Appleton Arena.
