Saints field hockey rallies for 2-1 win over William Smith

Sydney Giacin made six saves — including a stick save on a penalty stroke with less than four minutes to play — and Lucy Stillman and Maggie Green scored goals to lead the St. Lawrence University field hockey team to a 2-1 come-from-behind win over William Smith on North Country Field at Hall-Leet Stadium on Friday afternoon.

The win was St. Lawrence's first win over William Smith since 2009. The result moved the Saints into a tie for third place in the Liberty League standings with a 2-2 conference record. St. Lawrence is now 5-6 overall on the season. William Smith fell to 4-8 overall, 1-3 in the Liberty League.

"Sydney's save on the penalty stroke was pretty clutch," said St. Lawrence head coach Fran Grembowicz. "It absolutely fired us up and showed how much determination we had."

William Smith took a 1-0 lead just over nine minutes into the game, with Anna Rider sending a loose ball to the back of the cage after Lindsey Houseman made a defensive save on a penalty corner.

"I think the key to the game was that after William Smith scored early in the game, we didn't get down," said Grembowicz. "We just got more determined and started to find some chemistry on the field. Everyone was locked in on defense and everyone was locked in on offense."

The Saints tied the game on a penalty corner of their own after time had expired at the end of the first half. Stillman tapped in a centering pass from Alex Clark for her ninth goal of the season.

St. Lawrence dominated play in the early moments of the second half, and Green gave the Saints a 2-1 lead with just under 20 minutes to play. Cate MacKenzie sent the ball into the circle, and Stillman redirected it between her own legs towards the left side of the net. Heron goaltender Alexandra DeVito leapt to her right to stop the ball, but it trickled over to Green, who dove and swept it into the back of the cage for her fourth goal of the season.

"Maggie Green was a real spark for us today," said Grembowicz. "Cate MacKenzie and Anna Parker also found the gaps with some big hits today that allowed us make very quick transitions from defense to offense."

William Smith had a few chances to tie the game in the closing minutes. Sophie Craig sent a hard shot from the top of the circle off the post, and the Herons were awarded a penalty corner in the final minute of the game. But the best chance came off the stick of Kelsey Pierce on a penalty stroke with three minutes, 38 seconds left to play.

Pierce lifted her shot about four feet in the air toward the left side of the net, but Giacin stuck out her stick to stop it mid-air before she was mobbed by her teammates.

It was an incredibly even contest statistically, with St. Lawrence holding a 17-15 advantage in shots, and both Giacin and DeVito finishing the game with eight saves. St. Lawrence had nine penalty corners, while the Herons had six.

The Saints go on the road to face sixth-ranked Rochester on Sunday. Game time is set for 3 p.m.
