St. Lawrence University's baseball team will need to find a more productive offense heading into its 2011 Liberty League openers at Rensselaer Saturday and Sunday after going 2-6 and hitting just .203 as a team on its southern trip.
The Saints, who beat Knox 7-6 and Otterbein 3-2 on Wednesday and Thursday before losing to Nichols 9-3 and North Park 4-1 on their eight-game Florida excursion, had only one regular hit over .300 on the trip and only three players hit over .250.
Sophomore outfielder Carter Franz hit .379 with 11 hits in 29 at bats to lead the team and was one of only three players to see action in all eight games. Rookies Khifer O'Connor (.292 with eight runs scored, three doubles and a triple) and Zane Fish (.286 in 14 plate appearance) were the only other players to hit more than .250 in regular action.
Jason Conde led the Saint starters with a 2.92 earned run average in two appearances on the mound while Kyle Donaldson made three relief appearances, did not allow a run and was the winning pitcher in the Knox game. Senior Chris Cook bounced back from a rough first outing with an outstanding game against Otterbein in the other Saint win.
In their game against Nichols, the Saints were tied 2-2 in the top of the fourth, but Nichols scored four in the bottom of that inning and went on to the 9-3 win.
