(Alfred, N.Y.)- The SUNY Canton women's basketball team couldn't overcome a decisive run by Alfred University to end the first half as the Roos were dealt a 69-48 loss by the Saxons Wednesday night in Alfred, N.Y.

The Roos dropped to 1-6 overall and will close out their first semester on Sunday, Dec. 5 at home against Albany College of Pharmacy. The game is at 2 p.m. at SUNY Potsdam's Maxcy Hall.

Both teams exchanged baskets to start the game on Wednesday and the Roos found themselves ahead 6-2 with three minutes ticked off the clock following a jumper from Abbey Shoen (Waddington, N.Y.).

SUNY Canton again stretched the lead to four points at 14-10 with 11:50 left before the Saxons reeled off a 6-1 run to take a 16-15 lead with 8:12 remaining. The Roos scored five straight points to again boost their lead to four points for the third time in the opening half thanks to a free throw and layup from Shannon LaFave (Ogdensburg, N.Y.) and a layup from Tierney McGlynn (Watervliet, N.Y.).

But that's when Alfred seized control of the game firing in 16 unanswered points over the next five minutes and ending the half with a 34-22 lead that the Roos couldn't recover from.

LaFave led SUNY Canton with 17 points and seven rebounds. Senior Jackie Maynard (Brasher Falls, N.Y.) had nine points, four rebounds and two assists in her first action of the year after recovering from a knee injury. Heather Lottie (Canton, N.Y.) added six points and five rebounds and Shoen hauled in eight boards to go along with three points.

Lyndsay Murphy led three Saxons in double figures with 15 points and four of Alfred's 18 steals in the contest. Autumn McLain contributed 12 points and six steals.
