St. Lawrence University's field hockey team played 17th-ranked Cortland tough despite being without three starters due to injury in Wednesday's season finale for the Saints.
Cortland scored two goals in under two minutes in the first half and built a 3-0 halftime lead, but the Saints held the Red Dragons scoreless in the second half and made it a 3-1 game with just under 10 minutes to play, but could get no closer.
Cortland improves to 14-2 on the season while the Saints finish the year at 7-10.
Goalkeeper Julia Hudson had 16 saves in just over 60 minutes of action while Kim Haab played the final 9:54 and made one save. Carly Dziekan added two defensive saves and finished her sophomore season with 10.
Cortland opened the scoring 8:27 into play when Brittany Murphy scored her second of the year when she redirected a pass from Sara O'Brien at the right post. It went to 2-0 at 10:15 when Abigail Wentlent scored on a shot to the upper left for her sixth of the season. Alexa Sanzone completed the Cortland scoring with 4:20 to go in the first half when she finished off a breakaway by regaining the ball after a Hudson poke check and putting it back into the goal.
The Saints cut the lead to 3-1 at 60:56 when Kara Pelosi's shot deflected in off a defender for her 11th of the season.
Cortland outshot the Saints 26-7 and had 12 penalty corners to six for the Saints. Mairead Hourihan finished with four saves for the Red Dragons. Hudson's 16-save afternoon was her sixth double-digit save effort in 12 appearances this season.
