Sophomore Laura Finley hit her first career home run for the St. Lawrence softball team on its final day in Florida, but the Saints fell 2-1 to Grinnell to finish the trip with a 5-6 record. Friday's afternoon game against St. Benedict was cancelled on account of heavy rain and unplayable field conditions.
All three runs in Friday morning's game – both for the Saints and the Pioneers – came via the home run, as Maggie Remus put Grinnell out in front with a two-run shot in the top of the second that proved to be enough to ensure the win.
In the bottom half of the frame, Finley, who led St. Lawrence in doubles a season ago, hit a shot on a line to straightaway center that cleared the fence at the deepest park of the park to cut the deficit in half for St. Lawrence and make it 2-1 in favor of the Pioneers.
But that would be all the Saints would get against starting pitcher Melissa Anderson who went six and a third allowing seven hits and just one run with one strikeout on the day. Remus picked up the save in two-thirds of an inning worth of action, allowing one hit but no run as St. Lawrence stranded two in the bottom of the seventh.
The Saints finished the game with eight hits and six runners left on base, while Allie Courtwright allowed seven hits – including the Remus homerun – and struck out one in the loss.
Weather permitting, St. Lawrence is slated to play its next game on Thursday, March 31, as the Saints will play host to SUNY Potsdam on the Saints Softball Field at 3:00 p.m.
