Freshman defenseman Kelly Summers (Golden Lake, ONT) scored his first two career goals to highlight the Clarkson University Hockey team's 4-3 non-league victory over American International on Tuesday night at Cheel Arena.

The Golden Knights close out the 2014 portion of the schedule with a 7-8-4 overall record. Clarkson, which owns a third-place 4-1-2 ECAC Hockey mark, is now off until January 9 when it resumes league playing hosting Colgate. The Green and Gold, who have a full slate of conference games in 2015, play seven of their next nine games in Potsdam. The Knights finished the non-league portion of the schedule with a 3-7-2 mark with all the victories coming against Atlantic Hockey competition.

Tied 3-3 late in regulation, Clarkson's leading scorer, senior Joe Zarbo (Grand Island, NY) picked up a loose puck along the boards in the offensive zone and fired in his team-high seventh goal of the season at 16:06 to break the deadlock against AIC (2-12-4).

Clarkson outshot the Yellow Jackets 34-21. Both teams went 1-1 on the power play.

The Knights showed little rust from a 16-day layoff in the opening stanza, outshooting AIC 14-6 in the first period while taking a 2-1 lead. Junior Todd Christian (Norwalk, CT) started the scoring at 2:08 with his third goal of the season when he swept in a loose puck off a shot by classmate Christian Powers (Stouffville, ONT) that got behind the AIC goaltender. Sophomore Troy Josephs (Whitby, ONT) started the play with a pass out of the corner.

At 13:59, Summers finished off a passing combination from classmates Nic Pierog (Georgetown, ONT) and Sam Vigneault (Baie-Comeau, QUE) with a wrist shot from the right point for his first career goal, giving the Knights a 2-0 lead.

The Yellow Jackets got on the scoreboard late in the period when Alexander MacMillan tallied in front for his ninth goal of the season on a 4-on-4 situation with 35 seconds left after a faceoff win by Jason Popek.

The long layoff seemed to catch up to the Knights in the middle frame as the Yellow Jackets scored the first two goals in the period to grab a 3-2 lead. AIC knotted the game at 2-2 when Chris Porter knocked in a loose puck that got away from Clarkson's junior goaltender Greg Lewis (Mars, PA) at 6:03. The Yellow Jackets went on top with a power-play marker from Dominic Racobaldo at 14:17.

Clarkson came back with a power-play goal by Summers to tie the game 3-3. Summers took a behind-the-net pass from classmate Brett Gervais (Corona, CA) and flipped in a shot under the crossbar from the bottom of the left circle with 57 seconds remaining in the stanza. Junior Pat Megannety (Oakville, ONT) also assisted, working the puck free during a scrum in front.

Making his first start of the season and only second appearance of the 2014-15 campaign, Lewis posted 10 saves through the first two periods. Sophomore Steve Perry (Ligonier, PA) picked up the win, turning aside all eight shots he faced in the third frame.

Hunter Leisner made 30 saves for AIC.
