CANTON -- Traditional Arts in Upstate New York is hosting live band contra dances in November and December.
The first event will be Nov 1 at 7 p.m. at the TAUNY Center. The second is Dec. 13 in the Sykes Formal Lounge at St. Lawrence University.
Originally brought to the area by settlers from New England, contra is a style of folk dancing similar to square dancing but danced in long lines, a form that makes the dances more accessible to beginners. These community contra dances are lead by a caller and easy to learn.
The events are free, with donations accepted.
Musicians are sought and can join TAUNY's tune school on Wednesdays from 4:30 to 6 p.m. at the TAUNY Center.
