NORWOOD -- The Norwood Village Green Concert Series welcomes the area’s very own Northern Symphonic Winds, the annual local band showcase “Sounds of Summer Festival,” and the popular Wally Siebel All Star Big Band to the band shell over the next several days.

Northern Symphonic Winds will perform music suitable to outdoor concerts Thursday, June 23 at 7 p.m.

Founded in 1998, the winds is a 46-52 piece wind and percussion ensemble comprised of faculty from the Crane School of Music, northern New York music teachers, other professionals, and selected Crane students.

Scott Lavine will be in the conducting role for this performance.

The Sounds of Summer Festival will feature The Acoustic Brothers, blues master Don Washington and rockers, Six Foot Midget on Sunday, June 26. The festival has a special starting time of 5 pm.

The Acoustic Brothers started out in the MWCS gym passing one guitar back and forth between Austin and Alex Hammond. Jeffrey, the group’s drummer was added and then Preston became the group’s bass player. All members are underclassmen at MWCS.

The Acoustic Brothers have been playing gigs almost everywhere and just recently began to write original songs.

Papadon Washington started playing the piano at the age of five.

In addition to mastering the piano, he learned to play the organ, drums, saxophone, tuba, bass, guitar, and harmonica.

Don has played the Chicago Blues Festival, the Vail Jazz Festival in Colorado, and festivals in Belgium, Germany, Britain, Switzerland, France and Italy and the Netherlands – all to rave reviews.

He presently teaches 7-12 vocal and instrumental music at Colton-Pierrepont Central School and lives with his wife Dawn in Ogdensburg.

Six Foot Midget is a local rock and roll band that has been playing since the early 90’s. They are Ben Todd (vocals, guitar) Geoff Hayton (guitar, vocals) Jay Berkman (bass), and Scott Colby (drums, vocals). SFM has been a fixture on the local pub scene and has been very busy playing weddings and private parties.

The Wally Siebel All Star Big Band with trombonist Wycliffe Gordon will take the stage Thursday, June 30 at 7 pm.

For 30 years the Wally Siebel All star Big Band has performed annually for the series. Each year the performances are new and fresh with the appearances of guest artists. This year jazz and gospel trombonist Wycliffe Gordon is welcomed to the mix.

Gordon enjoys an extraordinary career as a performer, conductor, composer, arranger, and educator, receiving high praise from audiences and critics alike.

He tours the world performing hard-swinging, straight-ahead jazz for audiences ranging from heads of state to elementary school students.

Gordon is a former veteran member of the Wynton Marsalis Septet, the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra, and has been a featured guest artist on Billy Taylor's "Jazz at the Kennedy Center" Series.

The Wally Siebel All Star Big Band is comprised of professional musicians in Northern New York including faculty from the Crane School of Music, SUNY, Potsdam, area music educators and other talented musicians.

Admission is free but audience members will have a chance to contribute as “the bucket” is passed.
