Scottish Festival kicking off Saturday in Hammond

HAMMOND – The Hammond 2018 Scottish Festival gets underway Saturday, July 14 with a week of events leading up to a full festival day on Saturday, July 21.

The events, organized by the Hammond Historical Museum, include celtic music concerts, photo exhibit and talk, farmers and artisans market, tartan weaving, stone house bus tours, shortbread contest and Scottish games demonstrations on July 21.

The event celebrates the bicentennial of Scottish settlers in Hammond.

Specific events include:

• Sat., July 14 -- Ceilidh at the Iva Smith Art Gallery; Celtic music party MC’d by Kim Robertson from 7-9 p.m.; free and open to the public; contact Evie Saphier at 315-324-5767.

• Sun., July 15 -- Celtic harp concert with legendary Celtic harpist, Kim Robertson, Iva Smith Art Gallery at 4 p.m., followed by a meet-the-artist reception; tickets: $10 at the door; made possible in part by grants from state Council of the Arts and the American Harp Association; contact Evie Saphier at 315-324-5767.

• Mon., July 16 -- Three weeks in the Highlands; Mark and Louise Scarlett, Susie Wood and David Duff will present a photo talk at the Hammond Historical Museum at 7:30 p.m.; contact Donna Demick at 315-528-4742.

• Wed., July 18 -- Hammond Historical Museum open from 9 a.m.-6 p.m. with Scottish themed displays and merchandise for sale; contact Donna Demick at 315-528-4742.

• Wed., July 18 -- Hammond Farmer's and Artisan's Market, 3-6 p.m. with Scottish themed items; contact Lori Thistle at 315-324-5032.

• Wed., July 18 -- Tartan Weaving with Dr. Harriet Burris; learn about the history of tartans and how weaving was important in Hammond; see real tartans developed for the St. Lawrence River Valley; find your family's tartan; begins at 4 p.m. at the Hammond Historical Museum; no charge; contact Pam Winchester at 315-324-5286.

• Fri., July 20 -- Scottish Stone House Bus Tours; first tour begins at 9 a.m. and the second tour begins at 1 p.m. at the Hammond Historical Museum; approximately 20 houses will be seen with two inside tours; registration recommended; cost is $10 per person; Presbyterian Church will provide lunch (for a small fee) from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. at the church pavilion; contact Donna Demick at 315-528-4742.

• Fri., July 20 -- Shortbread Contest at the museum, 10 a.m.-noon; for rules, call Joan Hadlock at 315-324-5517; winners announced at the Scottish Festival on Sat., July 21.

• Sat., July 21 – Hammond Scottish Festival Day, 10 a.m. opening ceremony; 10 a.m.-4 p.m. early 1800s demonstrations of blacksmithing, creating wool and weaving, quilting, trapping and butter making, Highland game demonstrations by the Tughill Heavies, Scottish recipes, Scottish clans and tartan advice, 1-3 p.m. postage stamp cancelation, 1-4 p.m. photo booth with Scottish costumes and props, childrens activities including Highland gmaes, sporan scavenger hunt, tug-o-war, relay races, making Loch Ness Monster sock puppets, bagpipe demos, vendor sals, food and beverages by Good-By Earl’s Grill from 10-2, chicken barbecue at Hammond Fire Hall; live music all day; annual Hammond Field Day parade, led by Brockville Pipes & Drums at 7 p.m., auction, games, food and band at Hammond Fire Hall at 8 p.m.
