Orchestra, big band performances highlight Crane Youth Music Summer Program June 28 - July 9

POTSDAM -- The 38th annual Crane Youth Music Summer Program will bring 370 middle and high school students to SUNY Potsdam's Crane School of Music from June 26 to July 9, along with a chance to hear big band, classical and folk music from featured performers.

In addition to several performances by talented Crane Youth Music students and SUNY Potsdam faculty, the Potsdam Brass Quintet, Orchestra of Northern New York, Susquehana String Band and the All-Star Big Band will all return to the stage again this year.

The summer series will kick off with a recital featuring the Potsdam Brass Quintet at 7 p.m., Monday, June 27, featuring Crane faculty members John Ellis, James Madeja, Mark Hartman, Crystal Guy Sieger and Charles Guy. The free concert will be in Snell Music Theater.

The Orchestra of Northern New York will present a concert entitled "Out of this World!" at 7 p.m., Wednesday, June 29 in Hosmer Hall. ONNY invites the public to celebrate great music for Independence Day and take a musical odyssey through outer space with this concert featuring selections from Gustav Holst's "Planets," "Star Wars," "Apollo 13," "Star Trek," "Superman" and more. To purchase tickets, which cost between $10 and $18, visit www.onny.org.

Other musical highlights will include performances by the All-Star Big Band featuring trombonist Wycliffe Gordon with their ever-popular jazz set at 7 p.m. Friday, July 1, in Snell Theater, as well as a concert by the Susquehanna String Band at 7 p.m., Tuesday, July 5 in Hosmer Hall. Tickets for both of these concerts will cost $5 for general admission and will be sold at the door.

The rest of the concert series performances are free and open to the public. Performances include:

• Tuesday, June 28: Vocal faculty recital at 7 p.m., free

• Thursday, June 30: CYM counselor and staff recital at 7 p.m., free

• Saturday, July 2: CYM Wind Ensemble and CYM Symphony Orchestra at 7 p.m., free

• Monday, July 4: CYM faculty showcase recital at 7 p.m., free

• Wednesday, July 6: CYM like ensembles at 7 p.m., free

• Thursday, July 7: CYM student honors recital at 7 p.m., free

• Friday, July 8: CYM string chamber ensembles at 9:30 a.m. in Ralph Wakefield Recital Hall, free; CYM choirs/CYM Jazz Band and Ensemble at 7 p.m. in Hosmer Hall, free

• Saturday, July 9: CYM piano and harp recital at 10 a.m. in Wakefield Hall, free; CYM final concert at 1 p.m. in Hosmer Hall, free.
