MADRID -- The Madrid-Waddington Central School District is holding two events that will educate and bring awareness to the current opioid and vaping epidemics on Oct. 23.
Madrid-Waddington, Heuvelton, and Liston students in grades 10-12 will view the film Chasing the Dragon from noon-2 p.m. The film is intended to educate students about the dangers of opioid addiction and how to avoid them.
Following the film, an interactive panel discussion will take place.
The discussion will include representatives from the U.S Attorney’s Office, county sheriff’s department, state police, local first responders, prevention educators, addiction and recovery specialist, family members of those affected, and individuals in recovery.
A facilitator from the U.S Attorney’s Office will guide the discussion through the progression of addiction, as well as the community’s response and resources for it.
From 6-8 p.m., the public is invited to attend a Drug Awareness Community Outreach Event.
Joe Boswell from the Reality Check division of Seaway Valley Prevention Council will present on the dangers of e-cigarettes (vaping) from 6-7 p.m.
A three-minute trailer of Chasing the Dragon will be shown, followed by another panel discussion similar to what took place in the afternoon from 7-8 p.m.
The focus of this presentation is to educate community members and parents about the dangers of opioid addiction and how to avoid them.
Several local agencies will also be in the lobby to offer advice and assistance to those confronted by the realities of addiction.
