OGDENSBURG -- The Ogdensburg Parks and Recreation Department hosts what it hopes will become an annual event, a Sandbar Classic Fishing Derby on July 24, as part of the 51st annual Ogdensburg International Seaway Festival.
Each angler can only submit one fish from each species of bass, walleye and perch. Each fish entered will be weighed and its length recorded. Winners will be determined by weight. If there is a tie, the length will determine the winner. All weighing of fish will take place at Hosmer’s Marina.
Cost to enter is $10 per angler. Top three anglers for each division will earn cash prizes.
Registration will be at the Dobisky Visitor’s Center, 100 Riverside Ave., or can take place the morning of the tournament at Hosmer’s Marina from 6 to 7 a.m. The tournament will end at 3 p.m. when the winners will be announced and the trophies and prizes will be awarded.
The first 50 participants that sign-up will receive a free T-shirt, visor or adjustable hat.
City Parks and Recreation Director Matthew J. Curatolo said that the event will help showcase the St. Lawrence River and its diverse fishery. Anglers can fish anywhere on the St. Lawrence River.
“We’re excited to be part of the Seaway Festival and to show off our area’s fantastic fishing,” said Curatolo.
The event is co-sponsored by Cape Air and Algonquin Power, Inc.
