POTSDAM - In May and June, local photographer Greg Kie will teach free "Exploring Studio Lighting" classes for community members to explore ways to use artificial lighting to take photographs. These free classes will use the SLC Arts Lighting Studio equipment which is available at the Potsdam Public Library.

The same information will be presented in all three classes and will be offered: Saturday, May 26 from 1-3 p.m.; Tuesday, June 26 from 9-11 a.m.; and Thursday, June 28 from 5:30-7:30 p.m. While free and open to everyone, registration is required for these classes, because each class is limited to 5 people.

"Exploring Studio Lighting" will teach the basics of supplementary lighting to photograph objects and subjects. Class participants will use studio equipment for hands-on exploration of standard 3-point lighting techniques using key, fill, and background lights.

Lighting scenarios will emphasize product photography–accurately and attractively representing a product.

Students can also explore hands-on lighting scenarios for portraiture. Students who have DSLR cameras should bring them, but a loaner camera will also be available for use during class.

The teacher, Greg Kie of Potsdam, is the Senior Media Relations Manager and an Adjunct Photography Instructor at SUNY Canton.

The lighting equipment for photography and film was purchased by SLC Arts thanks to the generosity of individual donors and a grant from the Grasseroots Fund. The equipment is housed at Potsdam Public Library’s Cleveland Computer Center on the basement level of 2 Park Street.

To register, contact Bobby at 315-265-7230 or bgordon@potsdamlibrary.org.

Information and updates about the SLC Arts Lighting Studio, including how to reserve time to use the equipment independently, are available through SLC Arts at http://slcartscouncil.org/lighting-studio/.
