Education seminar series begins Sept. 5 in Potsdam

POTSDAM – SUNY Potsdam’s 2018-19 Disciplined Inquiry in Education Seminar Series will begin with a presentation at noon Wednesday, Sept. 5 in the Rebecca V. Sheard Literacy Center.

Jenica Rogers, director of college libraries and the Dorf endowed director for applied learning at SUNY Potsdam, will open the series with the presentation "Student Privacy Rights: Ethically Supporting Student Success."

Rogers will focus on a recent survey she and her staff conducted with students about their understanding of, and attitudes toward, privacy rights. Educational institutions can track data to help improve student performance, such as through advising software, and the group wanted to examine the ethical implications of this.

Rogers and her fellow librarians, Lauren Jackson-Beck, Jessica Ramey and Esta Tovstiadi, completed a student survey looking at the understanding SUNY Potsdam students have concerning their privacy rights in general, and regarding the college library in particular. They also asked students about their level of comfort in having universities and libraries use their data in different situations.

The seminar series is sponsored by SUNY Potsdam's School of Education and Professional Studies. Since its inception 11 years ago, the school has hosted more than 110 presentations as part of the annual series.

All seminar meetings are on Wednesdays, in the literacy center, from noon-1 p.m. These events are free, and the public is welcome to attend.

The remaining sessions for the Fall 2018 Disciplined Inquiry in Education Seminar Series are as follows:

• Sept. 19: Abere A. Kassa: "The Effects of Intrateam and Interteam Trust on Organizational Outcomes: A Multilevel Study"

• Oct. 3: Lisa M. Wilson: "Teaching Scholarly Editing Through Coding: Digital Mitford"

• Oct. 24: Sean A. Levius: "Use of Information and Communication Technology to Support Comprehensive Disaster Management in Caribbean Countries"
