Colton Country Days kicks off Sunday with disc golf

COLTON – Colton Country Days kick off this week and daily activities and a full day of traditional Colton Country Day activities are planned, starting with disc golf on Sunday, July 15, from 2-5 p.m.

The Disc Golf Clinic & Play event will introduce people to the sport and to the town’s course. It is free to attend; and discs will be provided for participants to use during the clinic and play.

Disc golf is a fun, inexpensive sport that is rapidly sweeping the nation and world. Players throw flying discs (similar to Frisbees) from a designated tee to a metal chained basket known as the “hole.”

The South Colton Disc Golf Course, built a few years ago on town property at the end of Morgan Road, is a ten basket course ideal for beginner and first-time players that stretches through the woods along the South Colton Reservoir.

The facility was built with grant support by the St. Lawrence Health Initiative and a combination of effort by the Town of Colton and volunteers, including Will Trithart of Potsdam who designed the course.

The clinic on Sunday, July 15 starts at 2 p.m. at Swift Field off Sugar Bush Lane in the hamlet of South Colton where there is a practice basket.

The clinic will be about 45 minutes long with David Tulloch as the instructor.

“Unlike traditional golf, disc golf is inexpensive and easy to learn. It is not extremely physically demanding and once you get started it’s hard to stop,” Tulloch said.

Anyone, residents and visitors alike, can participate in the clinic to learn the sport or brush up on skills. During the clinic participants will learn: what disc golf is; how to play; how discs fly; body mechanics for disc golf; and throwing techniques and demonstrations.

After the clinic those wishing to play the course with Tulloch will make the short drive from Sugar Bush Lane, across State Highway 56 to Wind Mill Road, and down Morgan Road to where cars can be parked by the boat launch.

Participants should be physically able to walk on uneven ground, go up and down hills in the woods, and be willing to look for errant discs in the woods. Shoes and appropriate outdoor clothing are a must; and water and bug spray are recommended.

For more information about the Disc Golf Clinic & Play contact David Tulloch at 315-244-9938.

The complete Colton Country Days schedule of activities from July 15-22 is available in the current week’s print edition of North Country This Week, and on the town website, www.townofcolton.com, and updates are posted on the Town of Colton page on Facebook.
