CANTON -- St. Lawrence Federal Credit Union recently broke ground for its new 33 Court St. branch.
The new building will replace their 11 Court St. branch, the credit union said.
They will open the new building in mid-December and host a grand opening in January.
“It’s very exciting to break ground on this new branch. It signifies a new phase in the growth of the Credit Union and the services we can offer," credit union CEO Todd Mashaw said.
"We look forward to the completion of the project and opening the doors of our new branch to our loyal members who made it all possible.”
The credit union also has two branches in Ogdensburg, at 800 Commerce Park Drive and 333 State St.
The credit union started in 1954 as the St. Lawrence State Hospital Employees Federal Credit Union, with its first office at the St. Lawrence Psychiatric Center. Membership grew fast beginning in the 1970s with the addition of other employee groups beyond the hospital.
In November 1990 the Commerce Park office was established. In 2001 the organization was renamed the St. Lawrence Federal Credit Union with the adoption of a community charter, allowing members from anywhere in St. Lawrence County.
in 2003, the State Street branch opened, and in 2004, the first Court Street branch opened in the old Canton Fire House.
And in 2013, as the credit union’s assets topped $100 million, 11,000 square feet were added to the Commerce Park building, and the credit union employed 32 people at the three offices.
