St. Lawrence County's 7.7 percent unemployment rate for May is much improved from the 9.1 percent reported by the state Department of Labor in May 2013.
But the number of people working in the county in May, 43,700, is actually down from May 2013, when 44,200 people were reported with jobs, which is part of the reason for the unemployment rate decrease.
The number of people not working and receiving benefits but who wanted jobs in May was estimated at 3,700 while it stood at 4,400 in May 2013.
Compared to April of this year, the May 7.7 percent unemployment rate is unchanged
To our east, in Franklin County, the jobless rate was at 7.3 percent in May, down from 7.5 percent in April, and much lower than the 8.8 percent reported for May 2013.
In Jefferson County, to our west, the jobless rate stood at 7.5 percent, down from 8.2 percent in April, and lower yet than the 9.1 percent rate reported by the DOL in May 2013.
The figures reported by the state Labor Department today are preliminary and not adjusted for seasonal variation.
