Potsdam Chamber offering giveaways, gift wrapping, promoting free parking to encourage 'shopping local'

POTSDAM -- To encourage area residents to “shop local” this holiday season, the Potsdam Chamber of Commerce is giving away tote bags, offering gift wrapping, promoting free parking and undertaking a marketing campaign.

“We are focusing first on Nov. 29 -- known nationally as Small Business Saturday,” explained chamber director Marylee Ballou.

She said the chamber registered as a Neighborhood Champion with the national Small Business Saturday movement, allowing themselves to receive free promotional items to use on Nov. 29.

The chamber and some of the small businesses in town will be displaying a “Shop Small” door mat and giving away canvas tote bags on Nov. 29 to those who are supporting Potsdam’s small businesses, while supplies last.

Another way the Potsdam Chamber will be supporting local businesses during the holiday shopping season is by having a Gift Wrapping Station at the 24 Market St. chamber office, on Nov. 29 and again on Dec. 13.

Shoppers that purchase items at a Potsdam business between Nov. 29 and Dec. 13 can bring those items to the chamber office to be wrapped on those two Saturdays. The wrapping will be free to those that have a receipt from a local business chamber member, up to three each. Someone at the wrapping station will be verifying and checking receipts. If you have items from a Potsdam store that isn’t a chamber member, items can still be wrapped at a fee of $2 for every three items. A receipt will still need to be shown to verify it is from a Potsdam business.

The wrapping will be done by members of local nonprofit or charity organizations.

“We already have Dec. 13 covered by Gina’s Gift and Hospice,” said Ballou. “I should have Nov. 29 covered soon.”

Those organizations can put out a donation jar themselves and display any items they may have for sale for fundraising purposes.

The Village of Potsdam board has once again passed a resolution to allow free parking in downtown Potsdam from now through Dec. 30.

“This is greatly appreciated by the chamber members and we hope that it will be used as intended, to serve the customers of our downtown businesses,” Ballou said.
