NORWOOD – The Nice N Easy chain of convenience stores is planning new one at the site of a former gas station at the top of the hill in Norwood.

The plan by the chain is to buy the vehicle service station at 72 S. Main St. now owned by James Doran, tear it down, and build a 4,500 square foot convenience store on the lot of about one and third acres.

The store would sell gasoline, and would need an area variance to proceed. Matilda Larson at the county Planning Office explained that a gas station usually is required to be 300 feet from a the nearest residential boundary, but the lot is about 80 feet from a residential boundary.

The county Planning Board is to take up the request for a special use permit and the site plan review at their meeting Feb. 9. They will make their recommendation to the Norwood Village Board on Feb. 10.

Another Nice N Easy is being built on Main Street in Canton. The chain operates stores in Gouverneur and Star Lake, and two stores in Ogdensburg

The chain has built more than 80 stores since they began in 1980.
