WADDINGTON -- Attempts to rescue a missing teenager who was a passenger in a boat that capsized near Cole's Creek has ended in tragedy.
New York State Police say the Underwater Recovery Team located Ayden J. Buffham, 19, of Massena, who was pronounced dead at the scene. Rescuers had been searching for the missing passenger of a capsized boat since Monday afternoon.
State Police members responded to Cole's Creek near Cole's Creek Road in the town of Waddington for a report of a boat capsized. Police say there were two passengers on the boat when it overturned, sending them into the water. One passenger was able to safely get to shore, while the other wasn't located until 2:31 p.m. Tuesday.
State Police were assisted by the St. Lawrence County Sheriff’s Department, New York State Department of Environmental Conservation, Massena, Waddington, Potsdam, Ogdensburg, Parishville, Hogansburg, Louisville, Brier Hill, Rensselaer Falls, Morristown, dive, and fire and rescue teams.
State police say the investigation is ongoing.
