Teachers awarded scholarships

Two new, first-year teachers in St. Lawrence County The Franklin-St. Lawrence were recently awarded $100 each by Franklin-St. Lawrence New York State United  Teachers  (NYSUT) United Retirees (FSNUR).

Both Michelle Cole, a special education teacher working at Potsdam Central, and Emily Pescatore, a Middle School Social Studies teacher at Heuvelton Central, were honored for their decision to enter the educational field.

Pescatore graduated from SUNY Potsdam in December 2023 with a double major in History and Social Studies Education and a minor in Psychology. Originally from Pierrepont,

Cole graduated from SUNY Canton and is currently earning her masters through Western Governors University.

Cole and Pescatore were selected from a pool of new teachers provided by NYSUT (New York State United Teacher) local presidents in both St. Lawrence and Franklin County.

FSNUR is part of the NYSUT Retiree Program, one of the most active and successful union retiree programs in the country. In addition to workshops on retiree issues such as Medicare, Social Security, and insurance concerns, the group sponsors activities such as trips to museums, social gatherings, and sporting events.
