WEST POTSDAM -- Trout and Heron Independent School, an innovative new microschool dedicated to providing a nurturing and student-centered environment, is proud to announce it has received a $10,000 grant from the VELA Education Fund.
This funding will be used to support scholarships for students entering grades K-2 during the 2024/2025 academic year.
Founded by Dr. Ashley Campbell, who holds a PhD in Education, Trout and Heron will open its doors in Fall 2024, initially serving grades K-2 with plans to expand to K-5 in the coming years. The school is committed to fostering a love of learning in a safe and supportive environment that prioritizes both academic achievement and emotional well-being. The school’s educational philosophy is rooted in the belief that every child deserves to be seen, heard, and valued.
Dr. Campbell, an experienced educator with a passion for innovative teaching methods, has designed Trout and Heron as a place where children can explore their curiosities, develop critical thinking skills, and grow into confident, lifelong learners. “At Trout and Heron, we believe in educating the whole child,” said Dr. Campbell. “This means focusing not only on academics but also on emotional development, creativity, and social skills. Our goal is to create a learning environment where each child feels safe, respected, and inspired.”
A cornerstone of the school’s approach is its emphasis on place-based learning, STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics), and fostering a deep connection between students and the natural environment. The curriculum integrates the outdoors into daily learning, encouraging students to connect with nature and gain a meaningful understanding of the world around them. This approach helps students develop practical, applied skills that extend beyond the classroom.
The $10,000 VELA grant is a significant milestone in the school’s mission to make this vision accessible to more families. VELA, an organization dedicated to supporting non-traditional educational models, recognizes Trout and Heron’s potential to create lasting impacts on its students and the broader community.
Trout and Heron Independent School is now accepting applications for the 2024/2025 school year. Interested families are encouraged to visit the school’s website for more information on enrollment, scholarships, and the school’s unique educational approach.
