More than 40 roads in St. Lawrence County remain partially closed and a travel advisory remains in effect as emergency workers scramble to clean up the damage from Hurricane Debby.
Abandoned vehicles, washed out roads, collapsed bridges and flooded homes are among the reported damage.
A list of road closures can be found here or at the bottom of this story.
St. Lawrence County Emergency Services Director Matt Denner said an emergency shelter has been set up and that people can call 911 or the emergency operations center at 315-229-3950 for help.
Social media is overflowing with photos reminiscent of a disaster film related to the event and emergency service providers including EMS, first responders, law enforcement and firefighters worked through the night to answer hundreds of calls throughout the county.
St. Lawrence County Sheriff Rick Engle reported that at this time there are no known fatalities related to the storm, but the damage is substantial..
“The travel ban has been lifted and changed to a travel advisory. There are many roads in the county that are still unpassable. Most roads with flooding or traffic hazards have been marked with signs or cones. If you need to travel, allow extra time and use caution. If you come across a traffic hazard, please report it,” he said.
A number of roads are closed due to flooding. The Route 11 underpass just north of the Village of Canton is flooded and closed, and streets in the Judson Street area are also closed. A part of Route 58 in Gouverneur is also impassable.
Pictures circulating on social media posted by residents throughout the county show roads completely submerged in Gouverneur, Colton Hermon, Edwards and other towns.
Most area fire departments were extremely busy providing traffic control and even responding to fires during the peak of the storm.
Gouverneur Fire reported rescuing a person clinging to a tree in swift water conditions.
Potsdam Fire is helping residents with water removal. Check with your local fire department if you need help today.
Central and Southern St. Lawrence County were hit the hardest while the river communities seemed to have escaped the bulk of the damage, but travel conditions were terrifying for some travelers Friday.
Photos show vehicles abandoned after people drove into what appeared to be puddles, but were actually missing roads. Some photos show open back hatches in vehicles that are submerged to the roof. An indicator that they had to exit through the back.
New York State is currently under a state of emergency.
