Susette "Susie" "Sue" Scovil, 68, Colton

COLTON -- Mrs. Susette “Susie” “Sue” Scovil, 68, of Colton, NY, passed away peacefully at home, surrounded by her loving family on Thursday, June 5, 2025, after a brief yet valiant battle with cancer.

Born in Potsdam, NY on March 11, 1957, daughter of the late Ernest and Frances Sweet (Layaw), she graduated from Potsdam Central School in 1975, as well as from BOCES with her certificate as a LPN.

On June 29, 1979, Sue married the love of her life, Petty Officer 2nd Class Floyd L. Scovil. Together, due to the nature of the Navy, they made a home in multiple locations.

After living in Maine, Rhode Island and Florida, and working various jobs, some as an LPN, and others not, they moved to Colton, NY, where she and Floyd would choose to raise their family.

There, Sue worked for HSNNY, and later at St. Lawrence County Public Health as an LPN and home health aide.

Throughout her career, Sue’s loving and caring nature, sense of humor, and selflessness led to long-lasting relationships with her clients and coworkers, to whom she was known by many as “Nurse Ratchet”.

In March of 2013, Sue retired from nursing to begin what would become one of her favorite jobs—being a full time Grandma.

Among many things, she enjoyed reading, cooking, baking, and sitting down to watch a good sci-fi or monster movie.

Sue’s family was always her top priority. Above all, she loved spending time by their side, especially at their large family gatherings and camping at Camp Just Enuff and Blake McNeil Campsite.

She always thought of close friends as family, and was recently able to visit some of her lifelong pals in Maine. Together, they indulged in a coastal lobster (or two), while enjoying the scenery, especially the lighthouses (a favorite of Sue’s), that surrounded them.

Sue is survived by her beloved husband, Floyd Scovil, with whom she would have celebrated her 46th anniversary on June 29th. She leaves behind her children, Chad Scovil (Kellie), Dalton, MA, Stacey Graves (Dustin), Potsdam, and Jay Scovil (Nicole), Canton. She was the “kindest, funniest, most encouraging, loving, and caring” grandma to her grandsons, Jacoby Scovil and Trevor and Aiden Graves, all of whom she adored. Sue leaves behind her siblings, Ernest Sweet, Gary Sweet (Tammy), Sherry Sweet, Timothy Sweet (Cheryl), Jeffrey Sweet (Tina), Jeanette Sweet, and Jonathan Layaw (Jennifer). Sue is also survived by a myriad of cousins, nieces, and nephews, too numerous to name, but all of whom were dearly loved.

Besides her parents, Sue was predeceased by her stepfather, Paul Layaw, as well as her sister, Judy Mills (Judson).

While Sue will be sorely missed by all of those who were blessed to have known her, she will always be remembered for her laughter and smiles, her hugs and kindness, and the love she so freely gave to so many.

The family would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to the doctors, nurses and aides at Canton-Potsdam Hospital and Hospice of St. Lawrence Valley for their care in our time of need.

Funeral services for Mrs. Susette “Sue” Scovil will be Friday, June 13, 2025, at 1 pm at Buck Funeral Home in Colton, celebrated by the Reverend Leon Sweeney.

Calling hours will be Thursday, June 12, 2025, from 4 pm to 7 pm at the Buck Funeral Home, 62 Riverside Dr, Colton, NY, 13625.

In lieu of flowers, donations in her memory can be made to Hospice of St. Lawrence Valley or the Richard E. Winter Cancer Center.
