NORWOOD— St. Lawrence County’s only Eastern Orthodox christian church will undergo restoration work funded by a grant through the Rock Charitable Fund of the Northern New York Community Foundation.
An April 2 press release from the Northern New York Community Foundation states that the Norwood church will receive $20,814 to complete a restoration project and complete a facility assessment.
The grant funding is intended to restore the ceilings and walls in foyers and a side room.
The total grant award includes up to $6,000 to consult with a preservation architect to create a preservation and restoration plan.
The church began in 2012, meeting in public spaces at SUNY Potsdam.
The church moved to Norwood around 2019 in the site of the former Congregational Church at 34 Main Street.
The Rock Foundation is a private organization that funds projects for organizations in the North Country. It is named after Marjorie J. Rock, who served as Second Lieutenant in the U.S. Army Nurse Corps, 1942. Ms. Rock retired from the Army as a Lieutenant Colonel in 1970 and made St. Lawrence County her home.
