National Hockey League (NHL) coach and Brasher native Derek Lalonde and his family launched an athletic scholarship program for local students. The Lalonde Family Initiative announced the Lalonde Family Athletic Scholarships, beginning with the 2023-24 academic and athletic school year. Two $10,000 scholarships and one $20,000 scholarship will be awarded annually. Austin Mason, who will be attending Penn State, Ella Bellinger (who will attend St. Lawrence University), and Kalissa Young (attend SUNY Potsdam) are the first recipients of $20,000, $10,000, and $10,000 scholarships, respectfully, provided by the Lalonde family.
