CANTON — “Two Hundred Years of Progressive Faith” is an exhibit at the St. Lawrence County Center for History and Culture, marking the bicentennial of the Unitarian Universalist Church.

The exhibit opens with a reception Saturday, Oct. 11, from 2-4 p.m. at the Silas Wright House and Museum, 3 East Main St., Canton.

Highlights include a 7-foot by 7-foot quilt from 1898, each square signed by female church members, and biographical information about many signees. The quilt was given to then-minister Rev. James M. Payson and his wife, Flora.

Other highlights include photos and biographies of past ministers, images of the original Union church and construction of the current church, details about stained glass windows, and a map showing more than 30 Universalist churches in St. Lawrence County in the late 1800s.

The opening reception is free and open to the public. At other times, museum admission is $5 for non-members. Donations are accepted.

The First Universalist Society of Canton was established Nov. 17, 1825, and was the forerunner of the current UU church at 3½ East Main St., the only UU church in the county. The Silas Wright House served as the Universalist parsonage from 1891 to the 1920s and again from 1952-1961.

The SLCCHC exhibit is part of a year-long bicentennial celebration, including the New York State Convention of Universalists Oct. 24-25, a concert of music by UU composers Nov. 14, and a bicentennial service Nov. 16.

The exhibit runs through Dec. 24. For information, contact SLCCHC at 315-386-8133, visit slcha.org
