CANTON — The St. Lawrence University football team kicks off the 2024 season with a home game at Leckonby Stadium, as they host the Endicott Gulls this Saturday, September 7 at 12 p.m.
Captains for the Scarlet and Brown this season are seniors Oskar Baldwin, Daniel George and Daniel Lawther.
Lawther, who missed a few games due to injury last season, played in seven games for the Saints and threw 48-for-84 for 478 yards and three touchdowns. He also scored one on the ground and recorded 137 yards. George ranked second on the Saints' lineup with 49 tackles (24S, 25A) and tallied two interceptions, one pass breakup and one quarterback hurry. Baldwin recorded 11 catches for 77 yards and one touchdown for the Saints.
The Saints also return all three of their Liberty League All-League recipients in 2024 with Cole Salyards, Thomas Our and Ryan Surhoff back in the mix.
Salyards earned Second-Team honors as a return specialist for the 2023 season. He recorded 27 returns for the Scarlet and Brown for 594 yards, for an average of 22 yards and a season-long 43-yard return. He also finished the season with seven punt returns for 67 yards. Salyards 22-yard average ranked fourth in the league standings last year.
Our helped lead the Saints defense with 36 tackles on the season, including 3.5 tackles for the loss of 17 yards and 2.5 sacks for the loss of 15. He also registered five quarterback hurries.
Surhoff finished the season with 48 tackles, 4.5 for the loss of 23 yards and two sacks for the loss of 18. He also recorded one pass breakup, two quarterback hurries, one fumble recovery and one forced fumble this season.
Baldwin and Salyards will be two of the top targets for Lawther this season, along with Shea Goodwin, Nicholas Huhtala, Matt Kowalski and Matt Ciesielski. Will Lederman, who stepped up as quarterback in 2023 will back Lawther as a running back this season.
Seniors James Berry and Marquize Barmore will anchor the offensive line, along with junior Peter Sleeper and sophomore's Finn Murphy and Jack Drought.
On the defensive side, Our and George will have the help of a group of seniors including Matthew Dahill, Dexter Seeley, Nicholas Giardina, Joseph O'Neil and Liam Perkins. O'Neil led the team with 55 tackles last season, while Perkins recorded 33, Giardina added 32 and Dahill finished the season with 29.
The Saints will look to the leadership of the senior class and a strong group of underclassmen in 2024, after graduating a core group of seniors, which included Thomas Dockray, Shane Clarke, Ben Munn, Owen O'Brien and Grady Harrington.
St. Lawrence opens the season at home this weekend, then will travel to Norwich to battle for the Hoffman Cup under the lights on Friday, September 13 at 7 p.m. The Saints will then play their second night game of the season, as they host Western New England on September 20 for the first-ever Friday night game on Laurentian Weekend.
With nine games on the schedule this season, the Saints will have a bye week before opening Liberty League play against Union at home on October 5. They then travel to RPI on October 12, host Hobart on October 19 and hit the road for games against the University of Rochester and Ithaca on October 26 and November 9, respectively. St. Lawrence will host Buffalo State on senior day, November 16.
