CANTON— A fire in a St. Lawrence University office building was knocked down in a matter of 20 minutes, Firefighter Drew Johnson reported April 8.
Johnson reported that Canton Fire, Rescue, and County Car 4 were dispatched to Fox Hall at St. Lawrence University for a fire alarm activation and smoke in the building.
Chief McGregor was en route within a minute of the alarm at 6:43 p.m., requesting a second alarm upon arrival on scene.
Johnson reports that Engine 6 was on scene within four minutes, with crews finding heavy smoke conditions upon entering the building.
Crews were reportedly able to locate the seat of the fire quickly and perform a quick knockdown.
They utilized a thermal imaging camera to locate hot spots and fire in the ceiling and the walls. The fire was placed under control within 20 minutes.
Rescue 1's crew assisted Engine 6 with fire suppression and a building search.
Tower 1 was placed on the side of the building and set up for any aerial operations that may be needed, while Engine 8 stood by at a second hydrant for the Tower.
The fire was located in a kitchenette on the first floor of the building.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation by fire investigators from both the St. Lawrence County Fire Investigation Team and New York State Office of Fire Prevention and Control. There were no firefighter or civilian injuries.
A total of 22 Canton Fire members responded to the call.
