NORFOLK — Members of 20 fire, rescue and police departments honored a 54-year member of the Norfolk Volunteer Fire Department on Monday.
Thaddeus P. “Ted” Coller, 77, of Norfolk, who passed away unexpectedly Wednesday, Dec. 4 while responding to a call to help a fellow community member, received Fireman Honors at his funeral service and burial.
“Ted Coller was a ‘firefighter’s firefighter,” said Derek Stevenson, Norfolk Volunteer Fire Dept. Vice President.
In addition to his service with the Norfolk department, Coller had served in many capacities on the local and county levels. He had been a St. Lawrence County Deputy Fire Coordinator, and was a charter member of both the St. Lawrence County Underwater Recovery Team and Norfolk Rescue Squad.
He was also the first Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) in St. Lawrence County, according to his obituary.
Following the service at Buck Funeral Home, Coller’s casket was loaded onto a Norfolk fire truck and draped with a flag.
The fire truck was part of the funeral procession, first stopping to salute the memorial for Coller at Norfolk Fire Station #1 on Main Street. The second stop was at Norfolk Fire Station #2, Raymondville. The procession ended at Visitation Cemetery.
Fire and rescue department members in attendance included included Norfolk, Norwood, North Lawrence, Brasher-Winthrop, Massena, Louisville, Potsdam, West Potsdam, Waddington, Madrid, Brushton, Colton, Parishville, Morristown, Hammond, Rensselaer Falls, Star Lake, and New York State Fire. The Deputy Fire Coordinator of St. Lawrence County, State Police, and St. Lawrence County Sheriff officers also came.
Coller was awarded a Certificate of Merit with the Red Cross for the first CPR Save in St. Lawrence County, receiving a letter of commendation from Pres. Jimmy Carter.
Coller is survived by his wife of 44 years, Darlene, Norfolk; two sons, Jason Coller and Justin Coller, both of Massena; his daughter, Heather Sullivan, Potsdam; ight grandchildren, Ryan, McKayla, Madison, Dylan, Dayna, Jessalyn, Hunter and Dekker; three great-grandchildren, James, Rosemary and Isaac; his brother, Francis “Fran” and Julie Coller, Raymondville as well as several nieces and nephews.
He worked for the Niagara Mohawk Power Corporation and held many positions throughout the years, retiring as a Traveling Operator after 32 years of service.
