LISBON — After a 5- year absence, the St. Lawrence County Polar Plunge to benefit the athletes of Special Olympics New York returned on Saturday, Dec. 7, with a plunge at Lisbon Beach.

A total of 50 people braved the chilly waters of the St, Lawrence River to support Special Olympics athletes.

The Polar Plunge raised over $5,000, with more donations coming in.

People can still donate at Special Olympics New York Polar Plunge.
The event was sponsored by the Riverview Correctional Facility and Potsdam Elks Lodge #2074.

Prior to the plunge, Potsdam Elks Lodge #2074, Riverview Correctional Facility and NYSCOPBA each presented $500 donations to Special Olympics New York representative Chris Hughes.

Dawn Merz of Yes FM 96.7 was Master of Ceremonies.

Ogdensburg Elks Lodge #772 provided a lunch following the plunge.

A sauna was provided by Mobile Sauna Rental.

The Brier Hill Dive Team and the NYS Police Dive provided water safety support, and members of the Lisbon Rescue Squad were on site for emergency support.

Members of the New York State Police, Troop B, were also at the event to provide support.

“Many thanks to the Lisbon Town Beach official for serving as a host site and to all that participated in the Polar plunge and to the many who sponsored a Polar Plunger,” said Tim Welpe, Potsdam Elks Community Activities Chair.
