NORWOOD — The air was filled with patriotic tunes during the Memorial Day celebration in Norwood Monday.

The Norwood Brass Band and the Norwood-Norfolk Central School Band performed both during the parade and at the conclusion of the ceremony.

The parade also featured the Norwood and Norfolk Volunteer Fire Departments and the Potsdam Rescue Squad.

The Norwood American Legion started their annual event with a prayer given by Chaplain Francis Sharlow at the bridge, and then the wreath tossing into the river.

Following the parade, a ceremony was held in the Village Green.

“This is a day of remembering our nation’s fallen. We appreciate you attending this ceremony,” said American Legion Commander David Butterfield.

Air Force veteran Annie Butterfield conducted the POW/MIA remembrance ceremony.

“Let us remember and never forget their sacrifices,” she said.

“Our service men and women we remember today have answered the call and paid their last full measure of devotion in battles, in service to our great country, since the birth of this nation,” said Jeff Gerrish, second Vice Commander.

“This past year our Norwood Legion worked to serve and provide for veterans who are residing in New York State sponsored Veterans Homes. These men and women who served their country and are in need due to physical disabilities are provided with a quality care facility surrounded by their comrade veteran friends," he said.

"If you have an opportunity to donate or better yet visit one of the Veteran Homes you will help brighten a day,” said Gerrish.
