Salmon River Central capital project focuses on efficiency, safety with no new local tax impact

FORT COVINGTON — Salmon River Central School District voters will be asked to approve a new capital improvement project proposal aimed at enhancing the district’s facilities and operational efficiency. The vote is scheduled for Tuesday, May 20.

The Foundations for the Future capital improvement project is a $47 million proposal with no new tax impact for local residents. The proposal is scheduled for a public vote on May 20 from noon to 8 p.m. in the Salmon River Central School Board Room, coinciding with the district’s annual school budget vote.

The Foundations for the Future project builds upon previous capital initiatives, focusing on long-term sustainability, safety and improved learning environments.

Key components of the project include:

  • Cost Efficiency and Sustainability: Upgrading HVAC systems, installing LED lighting and expanding geothermal well fields to reduce reliance on fossil fuels and lower operational costs.
  • Safety and Security: Replacing roofs, improving lighting, upgrading sewage and fire systems and enhancing the bus garage with electrical, roof and overhead door upgrades.
  • Enhanced Common Areas: Renovating cafeteria and outdoor learning spaces to create more calming and modern environments that promote positive student experiences.

“Our continued aim is to be prudent with both short and long-range planning for facilities,” said Superintendent of Schools Dr. Stanley Harper. “Through this project, Salmon River can continue to make strides toward fostering an efficient and inclusive learning environment while also keeping costs and future financial sustainability in mind.”

If approved by voters, construction is expected to begin in Summer 2026 and be completed by Fall 2027.
