COLTON— A portion of state Highway 56 closed by a sinkhole is expected to reopen to traffic early this spring, New York State Department of Transportation Region 7 Director Robert Haynes reported Monday, March 17.
Haynes reported that crews have been working on an accelerated timeline to reopen the road, which was closed March 2 after a sinkhole appeared.
Crews identified the cause of the sinkhole as a faulty culvert, and have begun work on a replacement structure, which is slated to be installed the week of March 24.
The DOT did not provide a firm date for the reopening of the road.
A March 17 press release from the DOT states that crews are working “as expeditiously as possible” to complete the work necessary to reopen the road.
The DOT states that it will provide updates to the traveling public as they become available.
