The Reverend Doctor Michael Alan O'Donnell (68) passed into eternity Saturday, February 15, 2025. He is survived by his wife, Rachel, his son Patrick with wife Julia O'Donnell, his daughter Kayla with husband Zachary Guerbe, and three grandchildren Willow, Sage, and Forest. Michael is also survived by his twin Richard O'Donnell and his older brother William O'Donnell, as well as several nieces, nephews, and cousins. Michael is predeceased by his daughter Cara O'Donnell, his father William Francis O'Donnell, his mother Valia Jennings, and his sister Desu (Dee) Reynolds. Michael is grateful for the love from his in-laws and extended family.
Michael was born on June 17, 1956 in Bryn Mawr, PA. He graduated from Penncrest High School, received two master degrees, and was awarded a PhD from Kansas State University. Michael was a professor and researcher on family and adolescent strengths and was a pioneer in the fathering movement. He presented his research before the UN in Vienna, Austria and was invited by the government of Singapore to present and advise on creating strong families. Michael authored or co-authored seven books. He served as a chaplain in the army reserves at Fort Riley in Kansas.
Michael was a brilliant trumpeter and artist. He enjoyed good books, movies with movie popcorn.
Michael loved people and looked forward to meeting with friends over coffee.
Christmas was his favorite holiday and when he was able, Michael dressed as Santa Claus delighting young and old alike.
However, his highest calling was that of priest. Michael was ordained in the Episcopal Church and dedicated the second half of his life to serving God and God's people as a priest. He served in Colorado Springs at Grace and St. Stephen's Episcopal Church, at St. John's Episcopal Church in Ogdensburg, NY, and most recently, at Grace Episcopal Church in Canton, NY. His love of God's word, the beauty of the mass, and the presence of Christ in the Eucharist drew him closer to God and sustained him throughout his life.
Michael loved and cherished being a husband, father, and grandfather. His children and grandchildren were lights in his life and he prayed daily for all of us by name. We are grateful for his life with us and we are comforted knowing we will be reunited in heaven.
Visitation will take place at Frary Funeral home in Ogdensburg on Friday, February 28th from 4:00 PM to 7:00 PM and the funeral service will take place at Trinity Episcopal Church in Potsdam on March 1st at 10:00 AM.
