POTSDAM -- The village of Potsdam will be helping out the Amvets Post 282 this year with the community's annual Memorial Day celebration.
"The village is assisting Amvets with the organization of the Memorial Day Parade and ceremony this year. We're helping out a little bit," said Potsdam Village Mayor Alexandra Jacobs Wilke at a special meeting of the village board on May 12.
"Stanley Crump, who has really served this nation honorably and really has served his community honorably by organizing this event for many years, needed some assistance this year so we are attempting to do so. So we are moving forward with a plan to have the Memorial Day parade. " Wilke said.
The village is inviting groups to line up at Potsdam High School's Leroy Street parking lot starting at 8:30 a.m.
The parade will follow the usual route, departing at 9:30 a.m., and proceed down Garden Street and then Market Street.
There will be a ceremony in Ives Park to honor the nation's fallen veterans and first responders.
Individuals and organizations who wish to take part in the parade by marching or taking a patriotic float should contact Administrator Isabelle Gates-Shult for more information, at igates-shult@vi.potsdam.ny.us.
"We're working on all of the details but I know we will have the high school marching band and a lot of the normal participants as part of the ceremony and the parade. So we welcome everyone to join us," the mayor said.
