POTSDAM -- The town board will meet Tuesday, June 10 and is expected to approve several appointments for the highway department, increase its highway repair budget with incoming state highway aide and approve an agreement with Clarkson University for its annual dragon boat races.

The board will meet at 4:30 p.m. at the town offices.

Town council members and Supervisor Marty Miller will be considering a license agreement between Clarkson University and the town to allow the college to host its annual dragon boat races and festival at Postwood Park Beach.

The town board will vote to grant Clarkson the revocable license to use Postwood to set-up and host the races in the park for a period of four days, from July 11-14, with the race itself being held July 13.

The popular annual event is now in its fourth year at Postwood, and as in year's past will coincide with an onshore all day festival featuring local vendors, food and live entertainment. Planned activities include a cornhole tournament, kayak and paddle board rental, playground and beach volleyball, face painting and temporary tattoos, DJ providing music and a mini health fair. Food trucks will be onsite and local crafters will be selling their wares.

This year, 25 boats manned by teams of 22 (20 paddlers, one steerer and one drummer) will race in two heats against other teams to compete for the top time.

The day will kick off at 8:30 a.m. with an "eye dotting" ceremony to "waken the dragons." Races will conclude around 1 and be followed by an awards ceremony.

The onshore festival will continue until 5 p.m.

The event is organized by Clarkson University, with Potsdam Town Recreation Department, to raise money to support mission trips, health initiatives, experiential learning, community service outreach and health education.

Also at the town meeting June 10th, the town board is expected to approve a state funding allotment for summer highway work.

The town is to receive $469,793.36 in CHIPS funding, $99,451.20 in PAVE NY funding, and $85,395.97 in EWR funding, and $66,300.80 in POP funding totaling $720,941.33. This year's highway budget was originally budgeted for $426,901.48. The board is expected to increase that line item by $294,039.85 to a total of $720,941.33.

The board is expected to approve the promotion of its new highway foreman, appoint a motor equipment operator and hire on three summer laborer helpers for the highway department as well.
