POTSDAM – Alivia Gilson of Potsdam Central School District, a student in the Criminal Justice program at the Seaway Career & Technical Education Center, is the May recipient of the Potsdam Rotary Club’s “Rev. William R. and Crystal E. Cuthbert Vocational Excellence Award Sponsored by Brookfield Renewable U.S.” Gilson is the daughter of Christina Gilson and Ed Gilson.
At a Rotary luncheon honoring Gilson, she met with Potsdam Rotarians and was commended for her academic excellence by Seaway Tech instructor Jose Colon.
“Alivia is an all-around outstanding person with employability skills that surpass most adults,” said Colon.
In the Criminal Justice program, students are provided with a working knowledge of the criminal justice system. This includes the roles and duties of law enforcement officers at all levels, the function of the court system at all levels, the tasks and duties of personnel involved in the probation and parole system, the purpose of special interest police (DEC, Park Police, etc.), the role of personnel in security, an understanding of the New York State Procedural and Penal Laws, and investigative techniques. There are also college credit opportunities.
