POTSDAM — Postwood Park will open on Saturday, May 24, weather permitting, with limited hours through June 1. Starting June 2, the park plans to be open daily from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m.
The Town of Potsdam Recreation Department has a busy summer planned, including its Parent-Tot and Learn-to-Swim Programs. These lessons will be held Monday through Friday at 10 and 10:30 a.m. from July 7 to August 1. Registration for swim lessons begins in mid-June.
This year, a new program called “Library at the Beach” will be introduced. Children’s librarian Maria Morrison will host sessions at 11 a.m. on Wednesdays throughout July, beginning July 9.
A bus service to Postwood Park is also being planned. The bus will pick up passengers around Potsdam at approximately 9:15 a.m. and return for drop-offs around 2 p.m. More details will be shared once finalized.
The Children’s Triathlon will take place on July 12, starting at 8 a.m. This event is for kids ages 5-10 and will include a 100-yard swim, two-mile bike ride, and a one-mile run. An Adult Triathlon will follow at 9 a.m., open to individuals 11 and older. The adult event includes a quarter-mile swim or 1-mile kayak, an 8-mile bike ride, and a 1.5-mile run.
After a year off, the Dragonboat Races will return to Postwood Park on July 13. This family-friendly event will feature food trucks, activities, and races. To register as a participant or team, contact clapoint@clarkson.edu.
Also new this year is “Rec for the Rest of Us,” a program designed for senior citizens and adults with special needs and their caregivers. Funded by the Statewide Community Regrants Program, this six-week program will take place at the Town of Potsdam Offices in the community room. Pre-registration is required. Programs include Glow in the Dark Painting with Liza Page on June 28, Line Dancing with Ro LaShomb on June 29, Poetry with Denielle Baxter on July 20, Movement & Music with Terry de La Vega and Beth Robinson on July 27, Seasonal Creations with Barb Hardiman on August 3, and Artistic Makerspace on August 10.
The second Annual Tri-Beach Triathlon will be held on August 23 in partnership with Norwood Beach. Participants will swim a quarter mile or kayak one mile at Norwood Beach, bike eight miles to Sandstoner Park, and complete the triathlon with a 6-mile run to Postwood Park.

Meanwhile in the village of Potsdam, the recreation program there has been interviewing summer camp team members, life guards and recreation counselors at Sandstoner Park and Beach. The village is planning for more extensive summer recreation programming this year. Notably a six week, all day, summer camp is planned that’ll be available for kids starting the week of 4th of July, with access to the beach.
